Girl Breakfast is a contemporary still life that plays with the tension between intimacy, aesthestic pursuits and the romanticisation of restriction.
A handful of blueberries, exactly half an apple, a single egg. 220 calories, meticulously spread out on luxurious porcelain and vintage silverware to elevate a hyper-controlled regimen into an act of curated elegance.
With this painting, I wanted to document my own past experience with an eating disorder, how feeding the mind became a substitute for nourishing the body. A secular anorexia mirabilis, seen repeated in countless Pinterest spreads and aesthetics videos: the less flesh a woman has, the closer she is to some platonic ideal of wealth and discipline.
